Last week we spent a day planting. At this property, planting was a culmination of a long process of choosing a landscaping company, consulting, designing, constructing beds, and finally, picking out plants. In the process of building the house, much of the surrounding landscape had been stripped of topsoil and needed to be rebuilt. At the center of the design was the clients’ desire to create a landscape that would invite their grandchildren to be outside and forge a connection to land that has been in the family for generations. We planted a Forest Rebuild, a Native Species Slope, a Fenceline Windbreak and, close to the house, a mix of edibles and ornamentals (one of the clients makes cut flower boquets).

We couldn’t have asked for a better day. Sunny weather, a breeze to keep the blackflies from biting, a fantastic ocean view, gracious hosts, robust plants. It’s hard work, but it sure beats a day at the office!
