Hold on for Hurricane Season 2024
by: Dawn Slack, Environmental Research Manager
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) article from May 23, 2024, anticipates “above-normal activity” due to several factors including “warmer-than-average ocean temperatures”. Out of 17 – 24 total storms, four to seven major hurricanes with winds of 179 km/h or higher have been predicted.
What causes a hurricane in the Atlantic?
Warm water (+ 27°C) and warm moist air are the two main characteristics required. As the warm moist air rises off the Caribbeans warm ocean water, it rapidly meets cooler air temperatures which condenses into storm clouds and rain. This condensation continually releases heat which raises the clouds and makes room for more warm moist air to rise from the ocean. A wind spiral is created from this cycle of heat exchange which is evident when looking at storm clouds from satellite.
The Gulf Stream is a conduit of warm moist air which helps maintain the cycle required to maintain storm intensity which bring hurricanes north along the east coast and into Atlantic Canada. A hurricane is exhibited when wind speeds are 119 km/h or greater.
Property loss
Coastal property loss has been an increasingly worrying topic over the past few years. Hurricane Fiona created devastating effects to many areas around the coastal Maritime provinces. Private property owners describe losing up to 10 m of their investment during Hurricane Fiona alone, while others find it difficult to put a number on their loss. It is possible that some homeowners have concluded that they have lost much more of their property than the actual measured amount, and other homeowners have lost much more than they think.
The problem with unmeasured data or “guess-timating” regarding property loss is the uncertainty it brings about, and uncertainty can quickly lead to property owner panic mode and progress into eco-anxiety. “Eco-anxiety is distress caused by climate change where people become anxious about their future” Understanding Eco-anxiety. Symptoms can include stress, sleep disturbances, nervousness, and depression.
Monitoring your property, Eases stress
Baseline data is an effective method of taking control of your coastal property concerns. Learn as much as possible about the areas where your property is at risk! This knowledge will help guide you to informed decision making.
Example
After a severe 2024 storm, you feel that you’ve lost 2 m of land from the crest inland, but you notice a new section with erosion and you need help identifying what the cause is and how to slow down the process.
Thankfully, you have accurate baseline data which was collected by HNH in August 2024 before the storm.
You make another appointment with HNH for post storm data collection – the data is collected again and it is determined you have actually lost 3 m of land. This is not the result you were looking for; however, you now know that you need to do something to help slow the erosion process.
HNH are here for this reason! We will work with you to determine which areas are most important to mitigate at this time as well as working with your budget and needs to get the job done.
Monitoring program benefits
What benefits does a monitoring program give the private landowner?
- Quantify the measured rates of erosion
- Remove the guess work; often homeowner partners don’t agree on the amount of land they’ve lost
- Information for government aid
- Several homeowners may be experiencing similar land loss, as a collective, the group can approach a watershed group or NGO to pursue help through government funding
- Measurement trends
- Measuring land loss provides information which can be studied for trends in specific areas of land
- Trends becomes more accurate as more data is collected
- Calculations of years to safely remain on site based on trends
- Peace of mind
- Our erosion experts are honest and want to provide you with accurate information
- We provide you with detailed measurements shown on an aerial map so you can witness exactly where we are measuring and what the results are
- Helping Nature Heal professionals
- Most dramatic erosion areas will become evident to us
- Pinpoint areas for strategic installation of infrastructure and plants
ABUNDANCE®
Abundance® is a powerful root booster we have formulated then third-party researched and tested through facilities such as Lambton College (Ontario), Acadia and Saint Mary’s University (Nova Scotia).
This root booster has been showing amazing results! It activates the root-to-root and root-to-soil connections and new mycelium growth has been seen in as little as one week.
Every plant implemented into a new project receives our Abundance®.
Over 23 years of serving hundreds of clients, we have a vast knowledge base, experience and expertise with slowing the processes of coastal erosion using our methods.
